Green Bay beat Washington 28 to 20.

See my previous post for the significance of this game.

Go Packers!

You may have noticed the new blog colors (how could you miss them? unless you are reading them this through an rss reader...). I have decided to temporarily bathe my blog in Green Bay Packer colors!

As you probably know, I'm not much of a football fan. For some strange reason, I have a strange desire to see the Packers annihilate the Redskins this Sunday.

Is THIS the freedom we are fighting for?

"Kids at Richland Center High School in Richland Center, WI got a chance to meet George W Bush during an official visit. However, any student who turned up wearing a pro-Kerry pin, hat or shirt was threatened with expulsion."

Lern to Speel at Fryz

While D shopped at Fry's Electronics, O and I browsed the toys and whatnot. Ironically, they sell toys aimed at helping you learn to count and spell, while selling products that say:
Always good to misspell "Warning" on a Chemistry Set. Owen also spent some time sitting on one of those stupid pocket bikes, hilariously named Pocket Rocket. The sticker on the bike declared "Not for Childern under 12!!". Oh boy.
The other toy that has been nagging at my brain isThe Wiggles Hot Potato. It is a stuffed potato that vibrates and plays the song "Hot Potato" On the box for the toy it says "It really shakes as if you are holding a Hot Potato!" Huh? Huh?? Huh??? HUH? Next time I bake a potato I'll try to notice it shaking....

The Sun'll Wash Up... Tomorrow....

Honestly, all I did was hit "enter" and it published this post with only the title. And it took like 4 minutes to do so.

ANYWAY, I've only seen tiny sunfish at the aquarium... imagine snorkling and running into this sucker!

nanowrimo and stuff

Our friend Eric posted today about an event he is taking part in -- National Novel Writing Month. This looks very cool; thousands of writers will each write a new novel in 30 days. Some of the writers, including Eric, will blog their novels I am looking forward to following it starting November 1.

This reminded me of the Blogathon that started in 2001 where, on a specific day, people post a blog entry every 30 minutes for 24 hours. Before the event, bloggers solicited pledges for every post (or a flat rate). It raised $20,000 for 77 different charities the first year, $50,000 the second year, and $102,534.46 the third year.

I was seriously thinking about doing it in 2004. I joined the mailing list and everything! :) However, they decided not to do it in 2004. I found out too late that another site DID do it: Project Blog.. 172 bloggers participated and raised $25,661.71 for 118 charities. Pretty amazing.

Maybe I'll do the Blogathon next year. As you know (if you've been reading my blog) I don't have the skills to do nanoblogmo.

Next year's Blogathon is currently scheduled for July 30, 2005 at the original Blogathon site. I have been considering writing and recording a song every hour. Maybe write it for 1/2 hour, post about it, record it the next 1/2 hour and then post the song for all to hear. A couple of things that would make this interesting:
BTW, this post started as a comment on Eric's blog post but got too long...you really should go read the inspiration.

What's Obscene?

Three Medford, OR school teachers were kicked out of a Bush rally yesterday because the shirts they wore were deemed "obscene." What did the shirts say?
Protect our civil liberties

Wow.

From the Peace Dept.

A couple things. This was in the Guardian in the UK - a book review on Michael Moore's latest called Will They Ever Trust Us Again? Letters from the Warzone to Michael Moore. The subheading says "Civilian contractors are fleecing taxpayers; US troops don't have proper equipment; and supposedly liberated Iraqis hate them. After the release of Fahrenheit 9/11, Michael Moore received a flood of letters and emails from disillusioned and angry American soldiers serving in Iraq."

an excerpt: "As we can all obviously see, Iraq was not and is not an imminent threat to the United States or the rest of the world. My time in Iraq has taught me a little about the Iraqi people and the state of this war-torn, poverty-stricken country.

The illiteracy rate in this country is phenomenal. There were some farmers who didn't even know there was an Operation Iraqi Freedom. This was when I realised that this war was initiated by the few who would profit from it and not for its people. We, as the coalition forces, did not liberate these people; we drove them even deeper into poverty. I don't foresee any economic relief coming soon to these people by the way Bush has already diverted its oil revenues to make sure there will be enough oil for our SUVs.

We are here trying to keep peace when all we have been trained for is to destroy. How are 200,000 soldiers supposed to take control of this country? Why didn't we have an effective plan to rebuild Iraq's infrastructure? Why aren't the American people more aware of these atrocities?
"

So what are y'all doing tomorrow? In case you didn't know, October 13th is Freeway Free Speech Day. Make a pro-peace/anti-war/anti-Bush sign, dodge the fuzz, and hang it on a freeway overpass! Check out the blog for tips on how to make signs, how to put them up quickly, where to put them up, register your sign for tomorrow, etc etc etc.

Demtags - Too Cool!

Ran across this link on Michael Moore's site... They are called Demtags, and were created by some fashionable New Yorkers that wanted a twist on the campaign button. Net proceeds are donated. They look cool, and are a great talking point!

Visit This Coffeehouse!!

We went for a walk around 28th and Burnside yesterday, and noticed this coffeehouse over at 28th and Stark (Portland, Oregon, for you non-friend readers! Yeah, I'm talking to you!) We were intrigued by their sign that says "Join us for Bush Sundays! 10% of all sales donated to Democratic Candidate for President".

The owner was very friendly and said they had donated $1400 to the Kerry campaign so far. If it didn't take me an hour to get there, I'd be there every sunday! Inside the coffee house, he had this Wanted Poster, which cracked us up.

We also saw this article from the Estacada Newspaper circa 1986. From what I could gather, the paper ran a political cartoon or satire of the v.p. (George Sr), and got a letter from his lawyers stating one cannot use the v.p.'s likeness to promote anything. The owner of the coffeehouse wrote back saying it was satire, and basically ripped Bush Sr. a new one. The sub-headline says 'Vice President George Bush may not read the newspaper everyday, but his lawyers do".

Finally, as we were leaving, I caught sight of this sign in their window, which I believe sums it all up...

Uh... I ....Ah....

Check out this site, called Is Bush Wired? Some people suspect W can't speak without the aid of a secret earpiece and a smart person feeding him lines...

"Americans have the right to know if the president can't or won't speak in public without covert assistance."

Help Support a Starving NHLer

Got this from friend Chris, written by Andy Martell in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Was going to make it look clever here on the blog, like an actual piece of mail or something, but couldn't make it legible and under 200K. Ah well. Here ya go:

A GOOD CAUSE - PLEASE CONSIDER HELPING - CANUCKS NEED YOU!

Hundreds of Professional Hockey players in our very own nation are going to be locked out, living at well below the seven-figure salary level. And as if that weren't bad enough they could be deprived of their life giving pay for several months, possibly longer, as a result of the upcoming lockout situation.

But you can help!

For only $20,835 a month, about $694.50 a day (...that's less than the cost of a large screen projection TV...) you can help an NHL player remain economically viable during his time of need. This contribution by no means solves the problem as it barely covers the annual minimum salary, but it's a start, and every little bit will help!

Although $700 may not seem like a lot of money to you, to a hockey player it could mean the difference between spending the lockout golfing in Florida or on a Mediterranean cruise. For you, seven hundred dollars is nothing more than a month's rent, half a mortgage payment, or a month of medical insurance, but to a hockey player, $700 will partially replace his daily salary.

Your commitment of less than $700 a day will enable a player to buy that home entertainment center, trade in the year-old Lexus for a new Ferrari, or enjoy a weekend in Rio.

HOW WILL I KNOW I'M HELPING?

Each month, you will receive a complete financial report on the player you sponsor. Detailed information about his stocks, bonds, 401(k), real estate, and other investment holdings will be mailed to your home. Plus, upon signing up for this program, you will receive an unsigned photo of the player lounging during the lockout on a beach somewhere in the Caribbean (...for a signed photo, please include an additional $150...). Put the photo on your refrigerator to remind you of other peoples' suffering.

HOW WILL HE KNOW I'M HELPING?

Your NHL player will be told that he has a SPECIAL FRIEND who just wants to help in a time of need. Although the player won't know your name, he will be able to make collect calls to your home via a special operator in case additional funds are needed for unforeseen expenses.

YES, I WANT TO HELP!

I would like to sponsor a locked out NHL player. My preference is (check below):
[ ] Forward
[ ] Defenseman
[ ] Goaltender
[ ] Entire team (Please call our 900 number/ask for the cost of a specific team - $10 per minute)
[ ] Jaromir Jagr (Higher cost: $32,000 per day)

Please charge the account listed below $694.50 per day for the duration of the lockout. Please send me a picture of the player I have sponsored, along with a Jaromir Jagr 2001 Income Statement and my very own Bob Goodenow (Executive Director of the NHLPA player's Union) pin to wear proudly on my hat (include $80 for hat).
