Oregon Beer Fest 2005

Mmmm.... Beer. Our friend Jay flew up from L.A. for the Oregon Brewers Festival in lovely downtown Portland. We took the bus from Estacada and arrived when it opened at noon. With another plastic mug to add to our collection and 10 tokens to start, we set out to drink some beer.

I tried to take notes, but as the day wore on things got a bit... scattered. We gave a Thumbs Up to:

The "So-So" beers (I won't link them, as they don't deserve it and it is a pain in the ass): Oregon Trail Wit, Solano Beach Sharkbitten Red, Eugene City Saison, Bison Brewing Organic Chocolate Stout, Roots Brewing Kolsch.

The Total Duds: Bottoms Up Buckin' Bitter, Main St. Ale House Single Malt Strong Ale, 21st Amendment Watermelon Wheat, Boulevard Brewing Co Bully! Porter. The total worst was Old Market Hop On! We were so excited to drink it, we lifted our glasses in a toast and shouted "Hop On!" Then we tried hard not to spit it out, and quickly declared "more like Hop Off!!" Thankfully we had Lucky Lab's Superdog right after, which heralded the return of our happy faces.

In other news, I was hit on 6 times, and the first "Wooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!" of the festival on friday occured at 2:05 PM. At 2:40 PM, we each bought 5 more tokens. Watch this video to see how good we were feeling at the time....
Dancing and Drinking: starring Jay and Lesley (Quicktime - 2 MB)

Our favorite past time while sipping was to make note of the excellent array of t-shirts. We caught some with our trusty digital camera:

This one was great, the front said "Please turn me over so I don't choke on my own vomit". This is the back:

Other excellent t-shirts include: "I will not remember any of this", a 50+ year old lady in a Hawaiian shirt that said "It's 5:00 O'Clock Somewhere" all over it, "F the FCC", "IPA Quality Control Agent", "Slowplaying - everybody's doing it", "Fuck the OLCC", and Derek saw this one and I totally want it.
We knew it was time to head home when the glasses clinked together a little shakily, and we took pictures of our shoes. Thank goodness for the bus ride home... a nice chance to sober up.

Embedded

Tim Robbins wrote and directed a play called Embedded that he has now set to film and is selling as a self-financed DVD. He is trying to distribute it in a unique way, and has chosen to use Netflix, Amazon, and his own website to do so.
The gist - "Designed as a satire but containing many gut-wrenching moments as well, it tells the story of embedded journalists as well as active soldiers who were involved in the invasion of Iraq by American forces. The play, and now the film version, savages the deep thinkers in the Pentagon and the White House for their lies and deceptions about weapons of mass destruction and other issues, including false intelligence that linked Iraq to terrorist cells. Embedded also confronts the U.S. mass media for what Robbins sees as a gross failure to uncover lies, thus serving as propaganda machines."
Tim Robbins is my kind of outspoken leftie. If you haven't seen it check out Bob Roberts ("I have all your both albums..."). Anyway, the DVD sounds provocative, there is a lengthy article on it at Canoe.

Hilarious

From McSweeney's - Passive-Aggressive Vegan Grocery Cashier: A Day in the Life

8:15 a.m.-8:25 a.m. After leaving questionably sarcastic note for Jennifer, drive to work. Tailgate Durango with "Carnivore" sticker. Feel he noticed: small victory. Arrive at work. Clock in. Intentionally snub butchers' department; give them the finger with hands in pockets.

Finally! A Good Use for Macs!

Went to Free Geek's 5th Annual Geekfest today. We went in The Tiger, and when we got there and tried to shut the slider, it fell off. I forgot to take a picture.

Anyway, we really came to see Sweetjuice, who of course rocked. We first saw them in their Adam + Kris variance, with Bob Wiseman and Carmaig de Forest about 9 years ago. Anyway, if you live in PDX they play often, so check them out. We also came to see Trashcan Joe, but alas the schedule was wrong and they had just finished when we got there. Instead we listened to Beliss, who sang prettily, but put us all in a catatonic stupor.

There were these awesome punk clowns riding very tall bikes - I think they were called Rodeo Circus. Anyway, there was some tasty food, groovy eco-stuff, a printer smash and we got a kid's tie-dye shirt for only $5!

Bits of Potter

Environmentalists that didn't pre-order, get your copies here.

For the pope's thoughts, go here.

""It is good that you enlighten people about Harry Potter because these are subtle seductions which act unnoticed and by this deeply distort Christianity in the soul before it can grow properly," wrote the Pope."

If I'm not home saturday, the UPS man better leave it on the porch if he knows what is good for him...

Hold that Tiger

We just bought a 1971 VW Bus.

The various owners have managed to keep all the records, so we were able to learn some cool things about it. It looks like the original owner was Robert Withycombe in Monmouth, Oregon. The bus was delivered to him 1/6/71, he bought it from Eyerly Volkswagen in Salem, OR. There is a sticker and membership card for the VW Vintage Club, entitling the bearer to a 10% discount on labor and parts. We know she has been to Canada, because there is a 1972 Canada National Parks pass amongst the paperwork.

It has a new engine, and we put new tires on it, got the e-brake fixed, and bought Owen a carseat suitable for a car with no shoulder belts. All in all, very fun to drive!!
